Crime Scene Investigator Role Summary

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is seeking a skilled Crime Scene Investigator to join their team in Canberra. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing crime scene support, conducting forensic examinations, and providing expert evidence to the courts.

This role requires a high level of expertise in crime scene discipline, including experience in major and complex crime scene examination work. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of forensic science and technical intelligence, as well as excellent communication and collaboration skills.

The AFP is a world leader in forensic science and technical intelligence, and this role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic team that is shaping the future of policing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide crime scene support, involving the application of crime scene discipline expertise to investigations within a team environment.
  • Plan and conduct forensic crime scene examination/analysis into property, serious, and major crime as required.
  • Provide accurate, professional, expert forensic evidence to the courts.
  • Provide accurate, professional, expert forensic advice to investigators and other internal/external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development, delivery, and/or assessment of forensic investigation training and capacity building activities for internal and/or external clients.
  • Contribute to operational briefings and debriefings as required.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the Quality System including completing administrative and technical reviews of volume, serious, and major crime casefiles.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe working environment.
  • Contribute to a wider understanding of the role of forensic operations within the AFP.
  • Undertake a mentor role for developing team members in property, serious, and major crime.
  • Maintain sub-discipline area of expertise.
  • Undertake tasks and projects as identified by the Crime Scenes Leadership Team.
Desirable Skills:
  • You must be an Australian Citizen to apply.
  • Formal (tertiary) qualifications and contemporary experience and knowledge in a relevant science/forensic/technical discipline.
  • Possess a Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Have a minimum of five years' experience in the crime scenes discipline, including undertaking major and complex crime scene examination work.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively to achieve outcomes.
  • Required to perform shift work and on call including weekends and public holidays.
  • Undertake an initial psychological assessment with ongoing periodic assessments as identified by AFP Management.
