Strategic Approvals Manager

About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as a Strategic Approvals Manager. This is a critical role that will provide leadership in navigating regulatory approvals under the Part IV Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act) and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) in Australia.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement approvals strategies for major projects, including residue storage facilities, mine relocations, and major refinery expansions.
- Coordinate technical studies, environmental impact assessments, and statutory referrals under the EP Act and EPBC Act with support from Approvals and Compliance Specialists.
- Apply a 'Whole of Business' approach to managing future Part IV EP Act and EPBC Act approvals for mining and refining operations in Australia, providing strategic advice to Alcoa's global business leaders.
- Lead studies and develop Environmental Review Documents for current and future Part IV EP Act and EPBC Act approvals.
- Ensure consistency in scoping studies and external consultant support.
- Support the Senior Biodiversity Offsets Specialist in developing Environmental Offsets Strategies.
- Lead regulatory engagement with EPA, EPA Services, and DCCEEW.
- Identify and manage critical risks associated with the approval processes, ensuring timely execution of risk mitigation actions.
Requirements:
- Degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or Engineering is essential.
- Experienced in managing major environmental approvals processes in the industry, preferably in the resources sector.
- Strong problem-solving skills, capable of navigating ambiguity and developing practical solutions.
- Extensive experience in environmental impact assessment and management plan development.
- Great influencing and communication skills at all levels of an organisation both with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to make sound, balanced judgments.
- Highly motivated, self-directed, and committed to teamwork.
- Effective in coaching, problem solving, and planning.
