Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Swinburne Full time

The Swinburne CSIRO PhD Scholarship offers a unique opportunity for outstanding students to pursue innovative research in Materials Engineering. Our collaboration with CSIRO enables successful applicants to work closely with leading researchers, exploring cutting-edge processes for metallurgical applications.

About the Scholarship

In partnership with CSIRO, Swinburne University is offering four prestigious scholarships for PhD research projects focused on metallurgy and materials science. The selected candidates will have the chance to contribute to groundbreaking developments in industry-relevant areas, such as electric smelting, direct reduced iron production, and critical metal recovery from waste streams.

This scholarship is highly competitive, and applicants are expected to demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. A thorough understanding of process metallurgy, chemical engineering, or related fields is essential for success in this program.

Research Opportunities

Four exciting PhD research projects are available under this scholarship:

  • Behaviour of Gangue Minerals in Australian Ores in DRI Production: Investigate the thermodynamics and kinetics of direct reduced iron (DRI) production using high-phosphorus, silica, and alumina-rich iron ores from the Pilbara region in Australia.
  • Fundamentals of Electric Smelting of Australian Ores: Explore the behaviour of high-gangue Australian iron ores in Hydrogen DRI processing and subsequent Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) treatment.
  • Smelting of Blackmass for Recovery of Critical Metals: Develop a high-temperature recycling process to recover valuable elements like lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, iron, aluminium, and phosphorus from blackmass, a complex material formed during battery recycling.
  • Thermodynamics/Kinetics of Critical Elements in Slag/Metal Reaction: Systematically examine how critical elements behave across copper, slag, and gaseous phases during secondary copper smelting, focusing on elements like Hafnium.
About You

To be considered for this esteemed scholarship, applicants must possess a Bachelor of Engineering (4 years), Bachelor of Applied Science (4 years), or Master's degree, with a strong background in Process/Extractive Metallurgy, Chemical/Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Proficient interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work within a diverse team, are also essential.
