Key Role: Principal Lawyer

A 12-month temporary opportunity exists for a skilled and experienced legal professional to join our WorkCover team. This is an intellectually stimulating and professionally engaging role that offers a unique blend of challenge and reward.

  • This key role involves conducting a professional legal practice, undertaking a range of complex legal work and providing supervision and guidance to other members of the practice as required.
  • You will be responsible for managing more complex damages claims and providing specialist advice and guidance on questions of law and practice to other officers within the legal practice group.
  • Liaising with government departments, corporations and instrumentalities will also be a key aspect of this role.
  • In addition to your technical skills and knowledge, you will need to possess excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to write and communicate succinctly in a variety of settings.
  • You will participate in and maintain a proactive approach to self development, including achieving CPD points and participating in our performance management framework.

Benefits and Requirements

  • This role requires six years PAE in personal injuries litigation in Australia, admission as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland and enrolment or eligibility for enrolment to practice in the Federal and High Courts of Australia.
  • You will need to have an extensive knowledge of the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules and be familiar with the rules of the Federal and High Court.
  • Familiarity with Workers' Compensation legislation, including the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002, Motor Accident Insurance Act 1994 and Civil Liability Act 2003, is also essential.

Our Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct a professional legal practice and undertake the range of legal work completed by the WorkCover Team.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to other members of the practice in conduct of legal matters.
  • Assist in providing legal training to officers of client departments and promoting Crown Law services to client departments.
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance on questions of law and practice to other officers within the legal practice group.
  • Liaise with officers of government departments, corporations and instrumentalities.
  • Negotiate skilfully in tough situations, winning concessions without damaging relationships.
  • Write and communicate succinctly in a variety of settings to convey messages that will achieve a desired effect.
