**Job Title:** Wildland Fire Observer

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Wildland Fire Observer to join our team at the Country Fire Authority. As a key member of our fire management team, you will play a critical role in detecting and reporting unplanned fires across various regions.

The successful candidate will possess exceptional judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You will be responsible for monitoring prescribed fires, tracking fire behavior, and providing timely and accurate reports to our emergency response teams.

We are looking for an individual who is well-versed in map reading and interpretation, with the ability to triangulate and cross-reference visual information with mapping charts. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for this role, as you will need to convey complex information effectively via radio communication.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a vigilant watch for fires and report suspected incidents promptly.
  • Assist with the monitoring of prescribed fires to ensure safe and effective outcomes.
  • Track fire behavior and movement to provide critical information to emergency response teams.
  • Precisely pinpoint ground locations and identify corresponding map references.
  • Provide valuable insights into local areas, including geographic features and risks.
  • Operate radio communication equipment effectively, receiving and conveying vital information.
  • Conduct basic weather monitoring to inform fire management decisions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of observations and activities.
Requirements:
  • Demonstrated expertise in map reading and interpretation, with a strong understanding of triangulation and cross-referencing techniques.
  • Exceptional judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in radio operation and communication procedures.
  • A thorough understanding of the CFA Act and Regulations, as well as fire behavior and suppression techniques.
  • Ability to participate in site inductions and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Strong record-keeping skills, with a focus on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Capacity to work long hours alone and in isolated environments, while maintaining high levels of concentration and focus.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate under pressure, with a calm and composed demeanor.
