We are seeking an experienced Senior Legal Professional to lead our legal strategy in Sydney. This role offers a unique opportunity for a legal leader to make a meaningful impact within a dynamic and growing company.

About the Role

This newly created position is ideal for a highly experienced lawyer with over 10 years of expertise in high-risk lending, consumer credit, and financial services. The successful candidate will act as the principal authority on complex legal matters, including consumer credit, subprime lending, and compliance within regulated, higher-risk markets.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and advising on all legal aspects of consumer credit, lending practices, high-risk consumer contract management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Overseeing dispute resolution and litigation within state and federal courts, focusing on consumer protection and regulatory adherence.
  • Collaborating with the Risk and Compliance teams to proactively identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Providing senior-level guidance on employment law matters and governance, supporting risk management initiatives and assisting with board-related matters.
  • Offering comprehensive legal counsel across departments, ensuring full compliance with Australian regulatory requirements and providing expertise in privacy and intellectual property law.

Key Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • 10+ years of post-qualification legal experience, with admission to practice law in Australia and exposure to UK consumer credit regulations highly desirable.
  • Extensive background in consumer finance, particularly in ASIC and ACCC compliance, with a deep understanding of Australian consumer credit, UFT, and insurance laws.
  • Proven experience in litigation involving individual consumer and small debt recovery cases.
  • Additional expertise in regulatory compliance or financial services law is advantageous, along with knowledge of corporate governance and company secretarial responsibilities.
