About the Role

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is seeking a highly skilled professional to manage legislative processes and ensure Australia's domestic legislation implements international conventions relating to preventing environmental harm from shipping.

As a Marine Policy Specialist, you will work across the organisation to ensure timely and effective implementation of legislative changes and support the executive through effective briefing.

Main Responsibilities

  • Leading processes to identify changes in international agreements, regulations and guidelines and ensuring that domestic legislation appropriately implements environmental protections adopted at the International Maritime Organization.
  • Contributing to the analysis and formulation of policy related to maritime environment protection issues and the preparation of documentation relating to the introduction of new and amending legislation and marine orders.
  • Developing Australia's position and preparing briefing on key issues for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and Pollution Prevention and Response Sub-Committee (PPR).
  • Researching, analyzing and developing policy on environmental issues and regulatory responses, both in Australia and internationally which contribute to the Action Plan to address marine plastic litter from ships.
  • Leading consultation with relevant stakeholders, including arranging and participating in stakeholder meetings as necessary.

Requirements

  • An understanding of international conventions, legislation and policies relating to marine environment protection, or the ability to quickly gain this knowledge.
  • Research and analysis skills, including synthesizing complex information to develop options or advice.
  • Ability to prepare briefings and presentations on complex issues for high level meetings.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others as part of a team and engage with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver results to a high standard in a timely manner.
