About the Role

The Airborne Tactical Officer plays a critical role in the New Zealand Defence Force, serving as the mission commander for the aircraft and responsible for its sensors, communication systems, and weapons. This position requires strong tactical analysis and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with the pilot and other crew members to achieve mission objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute missions, utilizing advanced sensors and communication systems to gather and analyze data
  • Provide tactical analysis and recommendations to the pilot and other crew members
  • Operate and maintain the aircraft's systems, including sensors, communication equipment, and weapons
  • Collaborate with other crew members to ensure safe and effective mission execution
  • Participate in training and professional development to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge
Training and Career Progression

As an Airborne Tactical Officer, you will undergo comprehensive training to develop the skills and knowledge required for this role. This includes:

  • Junior Officer Common Training (JOCT), which provides a foundation in military, mariner, and leadership skills
  • Observer training at RNZAF Base Ohakea, where you will learn to operate the SH-2G(I) helicopter and develop tactical analysis and decision-making skills
  • Conversion training onto the SH-2G(I) helicopter, where you will learn to operate the aircraft's systems and develop advanced tactical skills
  • Ongoing training and professional development to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge
