About This Opportunity

The University of Queensland is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fish Husbandry Specialist to join our team. This is a part-time, fixed-term position for up to 2 years, with a full-time equivalent base salary in the range of $78,000 to $87,000 per annum, plus 17% superannuation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the welfare, husbandry, and breeding performance of aquatic animals, including fish, crustaceans, and bivalve molluscs.
  • Deliver high-quality oversight and technical support for animal health and vaccination projects.
  • Perform daily husbandry tasks, including feeding, water quality management, record keeping, and equipment maintenance at the Ritchie aquarium facility.
  • Uphold welfare standards and provide care and husbandry to laboratory aquatic animals.
  • Perform and provide training in colony health monitoring and management services, including performing basic necropsies, collection and shipping of samples/sentinel animals, and selection of tests.
  • Perform cleaning, general upkeep, and biosecurity maintenance of animal holding and central areas.
  • Maintain facility equipment in accordance with the facility schedule.
  • Review animal ethics applications and provide feedback to supervisors to ensure proposed practices meet the relevant requirements.
  • Perform basic animal procedures, including anaesthesia, necropsy, and injection.
  • Prepare, administer, and dispense restricted drugs for use with animals for research purposes (rarely).
  • Work in specialized areas, such as PC2, infectious agents, quarantine, pressurized gases, and general chemical safety.
  • Perform record keeping in relation to operations and services, including database software, development of reports, inventory management, training, and animal procedures.
About You

The successful candidate will have some understanding of fish and aquatic animal husbandry and recirculating systems, including sensors used to monitor and maintain water quality.

Essential Requirements
  • Completion of a degree in animal science, or diploma, or certificate III level qualification in the animal technology industry, or other related fields, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training, which includes a minimum of 2 years' subsequent experience working in an aquatic animal facility.
  • Demonstrated clear and professional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to advise research and animal facility staff by email, phone, or in-person, and the ability to present information and written reports.
  • Demonstrated decision-making and trouble-shooting skills, utilizing background information/experience to take action in the absence of complete information.
  • Demonstrated experience to effectively plan and prioritize own time and tasks and work flexibly across different areas of the facility based on general direction from supervisors.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the relevant regulatory requirements with regard to Animal Ethics, Biosafety, Biosecurity, and Occupational Health and Safety.
