About the Opportunity

About Our Division

Regional Operations | North | Operations QLD | Operations & Planning QLD

The Australian Border Force (ABF) is tasked with:

  • Managing all operational border activities, including the oversight of travelers, goods, cargo, and compliance measures.
  • Overseeing the immigration detention network, ensuring the safety and welfare of detainees, and protecting non-citizen minors.
  • Establishing policies and regulations to facilitate the movement of travelers and goods, thereby supporting Australia's economy and security.

Most positions are located in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, with potential future opportunities in various ABF District Offices.

Casual Assistant Border Force Officers (ABFOs) are engaged at APS Level 2 to support frontline teams during peak periods related to the movement of individuals and goods across borders.

These officers primarily operate at international airports and cruise terminals, assisting existing teams during busy travel times. They may also work across various ABF sectors, including airports, seaports, mail facilities, cargo centers, District Offices, and Immigration Detention Facilities. Responsibilities include processing passengers and crew, data entry, claims processing, evidence management, and administrative assistance.

Casual Assistant Border Force Officers are offered work on a casual, irregular, and intermittent basis, which may include shifts during standard business hours, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays. Work hours may be offered on short notice, so candidates should be flexible and able to commute to ABF locations as required.

These roles are frontline positions requiring officers to wear the ABF uniform and represent the organization professionally. Officers must be comfortable interacting with the public and foreign visitors.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ABF seeks flexible, reliable, and adaptable individuals for casual roles at the APS 2 classification. Comprehensive training will be provided to equip you for essential tasks, such as passenger clearances.

Training typically lasts around four weeks and occurs Monday to Friday during business hours, with some practical components possibly scheduled after hours or on weekends to align with international flight schedules. Successful completion of training is a prerequisite for employment.

Key Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

  • Providing general administrative support, including processing travelers, crew, and goods.
  • Collaborating effectively as a team member to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Representing the ABF in frontline operational settings, engaging directly with the public, including foreign travelers.
  • Performing tasks in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Exhibiting flexibility and adaptability.
  • Communicating effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Possessing basic computer skills is essential.

Additional Information

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Wearing the ABF uniform.
  • Meeting and maintaining mandatory training standards.

Application Process

Submit your application and CV through the designated recruitment system before the closing date - Late applications will not be accepted.

As part of your application, you will need to prepare a half-page response document addressing:

  • How your skills, knowledge, and experience relate to this role.
  • Your interest in a position with the ABF and what you can contribute.

Response documents should be formatted in a minimum 11pt font in MS Word or PDF format, including your full name and the Requisition Number in the footer.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to complete an online capability assessment, which could evaluate cognitive aptitude, personality, or emotional intelligence.

For further details on assessment preparation, please refer to the relevant resources.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this position, you must be an Australian Citizen.

The successful candidate will need to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).

Diversity and Inclusion

The Department is committed to fostering a diverse workforce, and applicants who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, come from diverse cultural or linguistic backgrounds, or have disabilities are encouraged to apply.

RecruitAbility applies to this vacancy. If you choose to apply under this scheme and meet the minimum job requirements, you will be invited to participate in further assessment activities.

Relocation assistance may be available for eligible APS employees required to move. The level of support will vary based on individual circumstances.
