About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Lead Compositor to join our team in Melbourne. As a key member of our compositing department, you will be responsible for leading small teams of artists, providing high-quality composites, and collaborating with supervisors to ensure seamless execution of shots.

Salary: AU$120,000 - AU$180,000 per annum

Key Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the Compositing Supervisor and Visual Effects Supervisor to evaluate creative and technical approaches to assigned shots
  • Providing briefs and direction to the team, ensuring the appropriate execution of shots
  • Training and mentoring junior artists
  • Integrating 2D, 3D, and live-action elements to high-end visual effects film standard
  • Meeting schedules and show deadlines
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for production and supervisors, ensuring clear communication, resolving creative challenges, and adapting to changes in production and scheduling
  • Taking responsibility for the team's workload, time management, and notes/feedback actions required by supervisors
  • Balancing creative and technical aspects of each shot
  • Utilizing a strong understanding of colour space principles
  • Establishing workflow templates, methods of compositing, and providing documentation for other artists on the team where necessary
  • Ensuring department tools are available and properly set up for the show
  • Attending dailies and presenting the work of the team, guiding artists on how to present their work
  • Providing regular feedback to artists and ensuring quality control for the team

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of experience working in a film VFX pipeline
  • Previous experience as a Senior or Lead Artist
  • An excellent working knowledge of Nuke and production experience
  • Familiarity with stereo compositing and working with multiple render passes
  • A strong eye for detail, composition, colour, and lighting
  • An understanding of colour space principles
  • A working knowledge of the overall VFX pipeline
  • The ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex topics relevant to compositing and connected departments
  • Able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with other departments
  • A proactive and collaborative work ethic
  • The ability to multitask, prioritise, and problem-solve
