Leadership Opportunity

Achieve a secure, reliable and affordable energy future for Australia by leading the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). As Chief Executive Officer, you will drive strategic planning, budget management, and organizational development to achieve the AER's objectives.

The AER is seeking a visionary leader who can navigate complex regulatory landscapes and shape the organization into a recognized high-performing regulator. The ideal candidate will possess executive-level management experience, a deep understanding of government operations, and knowledge of Australian electricity and gas markets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to support the development and execution of the AER's Strategic Plan (2026–2030) and Corporate Plan.
  • Develop and manage budgets to ensure activities are conducted within approved parameters and aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Lead and empower the senior leadership team, assigning responsibilities clearly, supervising performance, and fostering a high-performing culture.
  • Maintain regular contact with the Chair to ensure timely communication of developments that might require board-level action.

Selection Criteria
  • Executive-level management experience and a proven track record of leadership in a dynamic, complex public or private sector environment.
  • Understanding of government operations and Australian electricity and gas markets.
  • Knowledge of the AER's purpose, objectives, and strategic plan.
