The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented graduate to join our team as a Radiation Protection and Radioactive Waste Management Graduate. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate to develop their skills and experience in radiation protection and radioactive waste management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the corporate and ISIS teams in radiation protection and radioactive waste management
  • Conduct calculations and modeling of radiation source terms for scientific experiments and facilities
  • Monitor personal doses and minimize risk by applying ALARP principles to radiation work
  • Interpret and apply radiological protection data
  • Provide a Health Physics service to personnel working in radiation environments
  • Develop and implement shielding and dose calculations/models
  • Ensure the application of BAT principles relating to radioactive waste in all areas of operations and new projects
  • Manage the safe storage and effective disposal of radioactive wastes
  • Manage the safe transport of radioactive materials, on and off-site

Requirements

  • Achieved or be on course to achieve a minimum 2:1 degree in a relevant field of study
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK at time of starting employment
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, able to influence people at all levels
  • Demonstrate good team working capabilities, and ability to work independently
  • Creative and proactive attitude to problem solving with an analytical and logical approach
  • The willingness to learn new skills, both technical and non-technical
  • Demonstrates a drive and determination to achieve results
  • Open-minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned to them
  • Good organizational skills and ability to take initiative

Desirable

  • Work in a controlled radiation area and with ionizing radiation, and wear and use PPE and RPE (if required)
  • Undertake occasional travel within the UK and overseas
  • Carry out manual handling activities
  • Full driving license
