The Role: Senior Civil Engineer/Technologist

As a senior civil engineer/technologist, you will be part of our transportation and infrastructure team. Your responsibilities will include technical design, project management, and mentoring junior staff. You will supervise teams, draft technical reports, manage project budgets, and ensure compliance with design specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage small teams of technicians, students, draughtsmen, graduates, and engineers
  • Mentor junior staff in relevant software tools and technologies
  • Review and approve the work of other team members
  • Develop and implement effective design solutions that meet client requirements
  • Draft high-quality technical reports and presentations
  • Make informed technical decisions and provide solutions to complex problems
  • Presentation and representation of technical work to stakeholders
  • Assist in drafting responses to bids and tenders
  • Develop knowledge of commercial aspects of project management
  • Understand functional unit technologies and markets
  • Inspect constructed works for compliance with design specifications
  • Conduct construction administration and monitoring
  • Prepare tenders for construction, including BOQs and specifications
  • Develop internal standards and implement them
  • Provide solutions to complex engineering problems
  • Perform design work duties under the supervision of a professional engineer/technologist
  • Apply SMEC's systems and procedures
  • Work with clients and municipal line departments to capture their requirements
  • Compile contract documentation and specification
  • Client invoicing
  • Project auditing (if assigned the quality auditor role)
  • Project management
  • Financial forecasting, budgeting, and resource planning

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree or Bachelor of Technology degree/higher degree from an accredited university
  • Minimum 3 years of practical experience in design of transportation and/or municipal services infrastructure, bulk water and sewerage infrastructure
  • Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
  • Knowledge of basic project management and use of project management software
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Civil3D
  • Working knowledge of Infraworks, Storm & Sewer Analyses, iDAS, Water Design Software, etc.
  • Experience with BIM systems
  • Basic knowledge of commercial aspects of project management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively write technical reports
  • Experience in government standards, codes, and documentation
  • Experience in design management and design delivery for projects
  • Experience in managing professional teams of medium/large projects
  • Experience in administering GCC 2015 projects
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
