About the Role:

Halcyon Knights is seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join our team in the Yorke and Northern region. This pivotal role involves providing administrative and technical advice to the Council, ensuring it fulfills its functions in line with statutory obligations, operational procedures, and Council policies.

As an Environmental Health Officer, you will support the community and Council by offering advice, education, and assistance on current and emerging environmental health issues.

  • Process wastewater applications within statutory time constraints and under Council's delegated authority.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints and inquiries related to environmental health in a timely manner.
  • Conduct inspections of food premises to ensure compliance with the Food Act, Food Standards Codes, and relevant Australian Standards.
  • Research and investigate unsanitary or unhealthy environmental conditions and other regulatory matters.
  • Undertake inspections and investigations as required by legislation.
  • Liaise with Council officers, Government departments, and other agencies as needed.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Council on legislative matters and other issues.
  • Represent Council professionally at seminars, workshops, and Appeals, and maintain current legislation and policies.
  • Assist in court proceedings, including preparing documentation and giving evidence on breaches of legislation.
  • Mentor other Council staff and share specialist knowledge.
  • Maintain records and ensure compliance with all Council and legislative requirements.

About You:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills to engage with the public, government departments, and Council officers.
  • Effective time management and supervisory skills to meet programme deadlines.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and communicate at a technical level.
  • Proficiency in recognizing and addressing public and environmental health issues.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant Acts, regulations, and codes.
  • Understanding of Council by-laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to mentor and share knowledge within the team.
  • Strategic thinking aligned with the long-term goals of the organization.
  • Recognised tertiary qualification in Environmental Health (eligible for appointment as a local authorised officer under the SA Public Health Act).
  • Experience working in Local or State Government is highly desirable.
  • Full driver's license.
