About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled Senior Lawyer to join our team at Victoria Legal Aid as a First Nations Access Specialist. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in developing and implementing a First Nations Access Service to support the legal needs of First Nations communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a First Nations Access Service to assist First Nations help seekers and clients.
  • Provide complex legal advice over various channels to support the legal needs of First Nations communities.
  • Assist in creating awareness of the helpline by performing outreach to the First Nations community and developing legal information resources.
  • Work closely with the Manager to support service design and development of service framework to ensure culturally safe and trauma-informed operations.
  • Establish relationships with key First Nations networks, including the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Djirra, and Lotjpa Independent Legal Service.

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Proven expertise in working collaboratively with First Nations communities and understanding their unique needs.
  • Knowledge and practice experience in child protection, family, criminal, and civil law matters.
  • Leadership experience in driving change and achieving excellence in service delivery.
  • Ability to align service with organisational objectives and develop practical strategies to meet stakeholder expectations.
  • A current Australian practising certificate that entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner.
