About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Beamline Scientist to join our team on a 9-month contract. Reporting to the Principle Scientist, this role will be responsible for delivering outcomes for the operation, maintenance, and development of the beamlines, as well as managing tasks and mentoring junior colleagues.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific and technical support, advice, and training to beamline users.
  • Reduce and correct user data and provide advice or further data processing and interpretation.
  • Advise and collaborate on the operational, technical development, and maintenance of the beamline, endstation(s), and their affiliated workspaces.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote and develop outreach activities within the Beamline Group.
  • Determine acquisitions and manage procurement of specialized equipment to maintain and increase new capabilities of the beamline.
  • Administer safe working practices and policies at the beamline and affiliated workspaces, ensuring users and staff are working in a safe environment.
  • Work collaboratively to share scientific expertise and contribute to the research culture within the organization.
  • Advise, assist, promote, and execute beamline workshops to grow the community and increase beamline productivity.
  • Execute administrative tasks related to the beamline user program, operation, and documentation, development, and maintenance.
  • Undertake specific beamline responsibilities as assigned by the Beamline Group Manager.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant synchrotron techniques, instrumentation, and data processing and analysis. Experience with the PD Beamline is highly regarded.
  • Experience with X-ray diffraction instrumentation.
  • Hands-on technical capability. Experience with scientific programming, developing hardware and controls systems, is desirable but not essential.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems on complex systems with agility and resilience in real-time.
  • Good customer service focus with a positive and solution-oriented attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce scientific outcomes and develop scientific collaborations with external groups.
  • Effective communication skills and proven ability to liaise with people at all levels. Ability to clearly and effectively instruct and transfer knowledge to users and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow policy, procedures, and guidelines.
