COMPANY OVERVIEW
Space Machines Company (SMC) stands at the forefront of on-orbit servicing, providing innovative solutions for both commercial and governmental clients. Our fleet of advanced Optimus Orbital Servicing Vehicles (OSVs) is designed to deliver critical services including on-orbit inspection, monitoring, refueling, debris management, and satellite life extension. By prioritizing space safety and sustainability, SMC is transforming the approach to maintaining and supporting human activities in outer space.
POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a dedicated, inventive, and flexible individual to join our team at SMC as a Senior Spacecraft Systems Engineer.
This unique opportunity involves the design, planning, and implementation of Rendezvous and Proximity Operations capable Attitude and Orbit Control Systems (AOCS) and approach methodologies within a dynamic and fast-paced environment. You will collaborate with a small team of specialists, each responsible for their specific areas of expertise while actively supporting and cooperating with teammates across various functions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, document, and disseminate rendezvous and service execution strategies for in-space servicing and maintenance scenarios (such as inspection, capture, and docking).
- Engage with engineering teams to provide clear and reasoned orbital analyses of satellite and mission scenarios, influencing high-level spacecraft design decisions across multiple domains (Power, Communications, Propulsion, Operations, Vehicle Design).
- Contribute insights and guidance on long-term constellation management and deployment strategies.
- Collaborate with operations teams to prepare and strategize in-space orbit management workflows.
- Design and create algorithms and strategies for autonomous rendezvous with non-cooperative targets for on-vehicle demonstrations.
- Support general AOCS activities, including simulation, modeling, algorithm development, assembly, integration, and testing.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
You will be an ideal candidate for this position if you possess:
- A master's degree or higher in a relevant field of science or engineering, focusing on orbital mechanics.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in AOCS, mission design, or orbital analysis (flexibility is possible if the candidate demonstrates strong competency and a practical mindset).
- The capability to apply sound logic and reasoning to transform loosely defined problem statements into actionable outcomes.
- A willingness to engage in areas outside of your primary expertise in a sincere and pragmatic manner.
- Preferably, experience or knowledge in Rendezvous and Proximity Operations/In-Space Assembly and Maintenance trajectory or mission design.
- Preferably, familiarity with Passively Safe approach concepts (such as Walking Safety Ellipse, Waypointing, etc.).
- Preferably, experience in satellite simulation and modeling using Matlab/Simulink or similar tools.
- Preferably, knowledge or experience in algorithmic design for autonomous operations.
- Experience with orbital analysis software (such as GMAT, STK, or FreeFlyer).
- Understanding of trajectory optimization techniques (cost minimization for Time of Flight, fuel consumption, under various constraints).
- Additional knowledge or experience in other aspects of spacecraft design and engineering, particularly in AOCS/GNC, is highly desirable.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
We are at the cutting edge of developing new in-space services and promoting sustainability, offering a fast-paced, innovative, and agile work environment where your contributions can significantly impact the future of space exploration.
If you are prepared to embark on an exciting and challenging career journey and are committed to helping us realize our vision, we welcome you to consider joining our team. This role is designed for those who seek to be part of something extraordinary.
