Australian Payroll Management Specialist.
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Australian payroll management specialist with a deep understanding of Australian payroll tax laws, compliance, and reporting. This is a short-term engagement to review, audit, and optimise our payroll setup, with the possibility of extending into ongoing hourly advisory support.
Responsibilities:
- Annual Filing & Compliance: Review payroll tax filings and ensure accuracy of annual reconciliation; identify compliance gaps and recommend corrections.
- Payroll Tax Audit: Audit current payroll processes to confirm correct setup across states/territories. Validate inclusion/exclusion of PAYG employees, Pty contractors (labour ex-GST), super, FBT, and allowances.
- Process Automation & Tools: Help prepare and automate payroll calculations via Excel models or recommend suitable payroll management software. Align payment cycles, reporting, and data inputs with state revenue office requirements.
- Ongoing Reviews: Design a framework for timely audits (annual or biannual) to ensure compliance remains up to date. Establish control checks for monthly submissions.
- Contractor Guidance: Prepare a practical Do's and Don'ts framework for managing Pty contractors and PAYG contractors. Clarify GST, exemptions, and treatment of materials vs. labour.
- Training & Coaching: Provide training and coaching to the internal team. Document compliance workflows and provide a clear reference guide.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 8+ years' experience in Australian payroll management and compliance. Strong knowledge of state payroll tax legislation across NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, NT, and ACT.
- Proven experience conducting payroll audits and preparing annual reconciliations.
- Hands-on experience with payroll/tax systems (e.g., Xero, MYOB, KeyPay, Ascender, or similar).
- Advanced Excel and payroll modelling skills.
- Strong communication and training capability to coach internal staff.
- Ability to work independently on short-term deliverables while providing ongoing consultation when required.
