Newcastle West, Limerick, Australia The University of Newcastle Full time

About the University

The University of Newcastle is renowned for its dedication to fostering a spirit of inquiry and creativity among its community.

Its vision is built upon a foundation of values that include excellence, equity, engagement, and sustainability.

The Department of Rural Health plays a vital role in promoting the health and wellbeing of regional, rural, and Indigenous communities.

The Department has received continuous Federal funding since its inception, contributing to its success in increasing access and equity for regional students and having a positive impact on the associated communities.

The appointment of Professor Jenny May AM as Australia's National Rural Health Commissioner in June 2024 has created a unique opportunity for the University to re-evaluate its approach to rural health education and training.

This pivotal role will involve leading the Department, promoting a clear vision and strategic direction, and collaborating with key stakeholders to develop education and research programs.

The Director will provide academic leadership, foster excellence in teaching, research, and professional activities, and ensure a visible presence across the Department's seven locations.

The Person

You will bring:

  • A PhD or equivalent higher degree qualification in a health discipline.
  • Demonstrated understanding of medical workforce needs and future priorities, including a commitment to rural and regional education and workforce development.
  • Extensive experience in rural health education and training, as well as research, securing research funding and disseminating research findings.
  • Substantial experience in Indigenous health education and training, as well as research.
  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing access for rural, remote, and Indigenous Australians to quality health services.
  • A sound understanding of government policies related to rural health education and training, as well as research.
  • A proven track record of multi-disciplinary collaborative relationships within academic health and with strategic partners in rural health.
  • Exceptional management and strategic planning abilities, encompassing staff, financial, and physical resource management.

Unlocking Potential

As Director, you will drive the development of a culture of excellence, equity, and respect within the Department.

You will work closely with the Pro Vice Chancellor, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing and the National Rural Health Commissioner to establish a comprehensive strategy for the Department.

The role requires exceptional collaboration and engagement skills, as well as effective management of staff, finances, and physical resources.

A strong presence across the Department's seven locations is essential.

The University of Newcastle is an inclusive workplace that welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds.
