About the Role

This role involves providing speech and language pathology services to young people in detention centres, ensuring their unique communication needs are met.

You will deliver high-quality individual, universal, and systemic consultation, assessment, and intervention services. You will also provide specialist advice to stakeholders regarding the care and support of young people with complex communication needs or disability-specific support needs.

Additionally, you will build the operational workforce's capability to understand, manage, and support young people's communication needs, aligning with case planning and intervention objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • You will conduct comprehensive clinical assessments of young people's communication skills, contributing to multi-disciplinary clinical evaluations and neurodevelopmental assessments.
  • You will develop reports that inform referrals and interventions in detention and community-based settings.
  • You will modify written information and other communication materials using Easy English/plain language principles and develop visual supports to improve accessibility for young people with complex communication needs.
  • You will implement interventions with young people to assist with understanding, expressive language, literacy, social skills, and daily functioning, demonstrating knowledge of trauma impacts on communication skills.
  • You will lead and facilitate multi-disciplinary meetings with internal and external stakeholders for integrated case management and open communication.
  • You will provide expert advice and support to stakeholders on profession-specific practice and client issues.
  • You will design and deliver speech-language pathology training programs to increase workforce skills and capability.
  • You will understand high-risk environment complexities and assist with safety and security by adhering to operational procedures.
