The Directorate of Commonwealth Budget Coordination is responsible for managing the Defence budget at a strategic level. This team offers the opportunity to work on high-priority issues that impact Defence and the Defence Finance Group (DFG) in a dynamic environment.

The role involves performing a range of duties in relation to the Commonwealth Budget process, including advising business areas on new policy proposals and their funding, preparing Budget documentation, providing support on Defence budget issues, and producing high-quality advice to senior executives on matters related to Defence funding.

This APS 6 position requires considerable stakeholder engagement and liaison with stakeholders on complex, difficult, or sensitive issues. The successful candidate will have reasonable autonomy to achieve outcomes, set work priorities, and manage workflows, using initiative and experience to research, analyse, and advise on key Defence budget issues.

A security clearance of Negative Vetting 1 is required, with the option to commence with Baseline Vetting while undergoing the Negative Vetting 1 process.

About Our Team

Our team is dedicated to delivering the Defence Budget in accordance with the Commonwealth Budget process. Key tasks include developing the Defence Portfolio Budget Submission, preparing Portfolio Budget Statements and Portfolio Additional Estimates Statements, and briefing senior leadership team members.

We are seeking an experienced individual with strong initiative, sound judgement, and excellent written and oral communication skills. The ideal candidate will also possess analytical skills, a commitment to continuous improvement, knowledge of external budgeting matters and the Cabinet process, and experience in financial analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration and communication;
  • Prepare and present high-quality advice to senior executives on Defence budget matters;
  • Contribute to the development of Defence Portfolio Budget Submissions and other budget-related documents;
  • Provide support on Defence budget issues, including costings and resource allocation;
  • Maintain accurate records and reports to ensure transparency and accountability.
