Launch a rewarding career in law with our Australian Government Graduate Program. As a graduate in the Legal Stream, you will work on challenging projects and develop your legal expertise in a fast-paced, supportive environment.
About the RoleAs a member of the Legal Stream, your work will vary depending on the sub-stream and agency you are placed in. You may be responsible for providing input into legal policy or assisting with its administration. You could also be involved in the provision of legal advice as part of an in-house legal team within Commonwealth Government agencies.
You have control over your career path and can advise if you prefer to be considered for Legal Policy, Legal Practice, or both sub-streams. You can also specify which participating agencies you would like to work for.
The program provides fulfilling work, challenges, and opportunities to strengthen and grow your skillset in a dynamic and supportive environment. You will make a difference to the lives of all Australians while advancing your legal career.
Most graduate roles are based in Canberra, but some positions may be available in other major regional centres. Relocation assistance may be offered to successful candidates.
Eligibility CriteriaTo be eligible for the Legal Stream, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be an Australian citizen at the time of application
- Have completed a Bachelor of Laws or a Juris Doctor by 31 December 2026
- Hold a valid Australian Government security clearance once accepted onto the program when required
- Be willing to undergo any necessary police, character, health, or other checks
The selection process typically includes:
- An online application where you'll upload your resume, academic transcript, and proof of citizenship
- Online timed written assessment activity
- Virtual interview
- Matching and offers where successful applicants are matched with a suitable placement in an Australian Government department or agency
