Job Opportunity:

Emergency Psychiatry Staff Specialist

The position of Emergency Psychiatry Staff Specialist is located within the hospital's mental health service. The successful applicant will provide specialist psychiatric leadership and integrated care for mental health crises in emergency settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert psychiatric evaluation, diagnostic clarification, and psychopharmacological management for patients in emergency departments.
  • Act as a key medical leader within the Emergency Psychiatry Team, offering expert consultation and supporting shared decision-making with the ED team.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary discussions for assessment, risk management, and complex care planning.
  • Authorise involuntary treatment and facilitate admission to inpatient units as required.
  • Liaise with community mental health services to ensure continuity of care and safe discharge planning with robust safety plans.
  • Provide oversight and consultation for brief therapeutic interventions to enable safe transitions for patients presenting in crisis.

Clinical Duties and Collaboration:

Embed within emergency departments to deliver timely, compassionate, and expert psychiatric care in low-stimulus, therapeutic environments.

Ensure timely and culturally safe psychiatric assessments and interventions for acute behavioural disturbances.

Collaborate with emergency physicians, toxicologists, nursing, allied health, and substance-use specialists, and coordinate with community services.

Research and Model of Care Development:

Contribute to refining and evaluating the Integrated Collaborative Care Model for Emergency Psychiatry. Work with the emergency psychiatry team to develop timely interventions and coordinated care pathways, assess care effectiveness, identify best practices, and drive collaborative research initiatives.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Registration or eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Fellowship of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and/or equivalent specialist recognition; demonstrated subspecialty training in Psychiatry.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices.
  • Proven experience delivering high-quality service in psychiatry in public hospital settings; involvement in quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate) and to professional development of junior staff.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate with patients, families, and colleagues across multiple sites.
  • Commitment to research relevant to the role and departmental needs.
