School Counsellor Role

As a key member of the educational team, school counsellors play a vital role in providing counselling and psychological assessment to students. This complements and enhances teacher work, contributing to strengthened student learning and wellbeing outcomes.

They assist families in understanding and managing their children's learning and mental health needs, collaborating with multiple school communities, colleagues, and outside agencies.

Collaborative teamwork is essential, drawing upon diverse skills and expertise within a supportive multidisciplinary team. Regular supervision with a Senior Psychologist Education helps develop professional competencies.

The NSW Department of Education provides opportunities for ongoing professional development and supports completion or maintenance of Psychology Board of Australia registration.

School counsellors also participate in group and peer supervision within the district school counselling team, allowing them to expand their skillset and make a positive impact on the lives of children and young people.
