About the Role

The Principal Dam Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of BMA's tailings and water storage facilities. This position requires a strong focus on safety culture, technical expertise, and leadership skills.

The successful candidate will provide engineering technical leadership, manage existing facilities, and develop new ones. They will also be responsible for maintaining standards and guidelines for dam design and maintenance, providing technical support to the responsible dam engineers, and assisting with compliance activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide subject matter expertise and technical guidance on tailings and water storage facilities.
  • Support risk management activities to ensure a standardized approach incorporating key engineering inputs.
  • Support the team in conformance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM).
  • Manage contracts and work packages with the Engineer of Record teams.
  • Manage contracts with Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB) and coordinate annual reviews.
  • Interface with the BHP Tailings Excellence Team and Global Practice Leads.
  • Support dam risk reduction projects.
  • Interface with key groups such as ANCOLD, ICOLD, CDA, and MAC on emerging practice standards.
  • Develop and maintain BMA standards, guidelines, and procedures relating to dams.
About You

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil or geotechnical engineering, with at least 15 years of experience in tailings and water storage investigation, design, construction, maintenance, remediation, operation, and closure.

They will possess excellent stakeholder engagement, influencing skills, and the ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels and disciplines.

The successful candidate will also have a strong focus on safety culture, a degree in civil or geotechnical engineering, and experience in design criteria, failure impact and consequence category assessment, risk assessment, construction QA/QC, dam-related emergency preparedness and response, tailings monitoring and reconciliation, and dam remediation and closure.
