Job Overview

The Senior Principal Structural Engineer plays a pivotal role in driving innovation and delivering complex solutions that have a profound impact on the business.

This highly skilled individual will be responsible for conceptualizing and implementing creative solutions to intricate structural challenges, leveraging their broad base of knowledge in Engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Conceptualize, develop, and implement detailed designs as per design basis, project specifications, design codes, and standards.
  • Utilize in-depth expertise and comprehensive knowledge of the business to address complex problems and non-standard situations.
  • Create clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and procedures.
  • Manage time effectively to meet objectives and forecast resource requirements (as Lead Engineer).
  • Communicate and explain difficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point of view.
  • Lead medium or large Engineering teams, direct discipline engineering design of assigned work areas, and complete projects within planned schedules and budgets.
  • Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of Discipline execution on the project including scope, deliverables, schedule, and manpower resources; agree allocations with the Discipline Manager.
  • Ensure interfaces and deliverables are identified; maintain progress and productivity; act as project representative for Discipline in meetings.
  • Coordinate with customer discipline leads and relevant agencies (certifying authorities, auditors, third parties).
  • Train/mentor other employees in the department.
  • Assist and monitor MOPEX offices on projects.
  • Understand other engineering departments; initiate input from other disciplines.
  • Understand construction/fabrication yard and client requirements; maintain commercial insight.
  • Help maintain Unifi; prepare bids from sketching data using experience.
  • Supervise engineers and designers; define scopes of work for engineering/construction fabrication yard.
  • Provide engineering support as required.
  • Perform engineering checks of drafting and checks prepared by others; perform design verification through single discipline checks and assist with IDC.
  • Prepare MTOs of structures; prepare specifications and subcontract; review vendor data; prepare technical bid evaluations.
  • Assist in furthering the department.
  • Coordinate and check the work of senior and junior engineers; conduct peer reviews; provide technical assistance.
  • Prepare structural analyses and reports or perform specialist tasks (architectural designs, underground piping designs, complex structures, topsides, jackets, weight control reports, COG reports).
  • Specialize in multiple fields (geotechnical, steel, concrete, dynamic calculations, FEM, fatigue calculations, earthquake, jackets, FPSOs, blast, hydrodynamics, architectural).
  • Specialize in several design codes (EC, ACI/AISC/API, GOST, …).
  • Check designs for operability, constructability, and maintainability.
  • Prepare project engineering guides.
Lead Engineer Tasks
  • Work as Lead Engineer on medium to large EPC projects.
  • Be responsible for all engineering and design work on the project.
  • Have full control and manage work hours, materials, progress.
  • Work in close liaison with the Design Coordinator.
  • Set up all engineering computer systems.
  • Assist Project Manager with deliverable control, schedule, progress reports, and man-hour/cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with project management; train personnel under supervision.
  • Responsible for discipline within the engineering group; manage (design) subcontracts.
  • Identify and manage changes in the scope of work; file engineering work; provide feedback to the department.
QualificationsEssential Qualifications and Education
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in engineering.
  • 20+ years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultants predominantly performing detail design.
  • Preferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of professional engineering society as applicable.
  • Seasoned knowledge of engineering standards and specifications.
  • Good knowledge of engineering software.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Good working knowledge of English, both oral and written.
  • HSE, TQM, and cost-conscious.
  • Good technical structural knowledge.
  • Good organizer, motivator, and supervisor.
  • Keen on improving the effectiveness of the work.
  • Shows flexibility and ensures proper hand-over with regards to reassignment to other departments/construction sites/fabrication yards, replacement of colleagues during illness/holidays, assisting other colleagues with heavy workloads, managing/learning current methods and software, and reassignment to other McDermott offices.
