The La Trobe University is seeking a highly experienced and accomplished Senior Research Director to lead the La Trobe Institute for Sustainable Agriculture and Food (LISAF).

About the Position

As the Director of LISAF, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture and food research at La Trobe University. You will be responsible for leading a team of researchers and academics to develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with the University's research strategy.

You will work closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Industry Engagement, and other senior leaders to ensure the effective achievement of the Institute's Strategic and Operational Plans.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for LISAF, including setting clear goals, priorities, and action plans.
  • Provide exemplary research and innovation leadership, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and knowledge translation across the research domains.
  • Lead the development of funding pipelines to support large-scale programs of research, collaborating with domain leads and external partners.
  • Exercise strategic academic and administrative leadership, assuming overall responsibility for the operations of the Institute.
  • Foster excellence and advancement of the research discipline of agri-food biotechnology, promoting value chain impact through collaborations with industry, government, and research institutions nationally and internationally.
Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Demonstrated previous experience in research leadership at Professorial Level, with a proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans that achieve set key performance indicators.
  • An outstanding record of original, innovative, and internationally recognised research in the agrifood sector, with evidence of its impact and significance in agrifood value chains.
  • A strong understanding of the food and agriculture industries, as well as policy settings shaping these sectors.
  • Demonstrated high-level strategic leadership and management experience in leading research teams or programs, fostering the research activities of others, and contributing effectively at multiple levels within the organisation.
  • A substantial record of success in external research funding through competitive national or international grants, philanthropy, and/or industry funding.
  • Effectiveness in liaising with and delivering outcome-focused programs with collaborators and industry partners, and in promoting research links with outside organisations/agencies.
