The role of Principal Electrical Engineer – Substations involves the design and development of protection schemes for high voltage/medium voltage substations, transmission networks, and distribution systems. This challenging position requires a strong technical background and excellent communication skills.

About the Job
  • This is an opportunity to work on designing and developing protection schemes for HV/MV substations, transmission networks, and distribution systems.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and reviewing relay protection settings, logic diagrams, and scheme drawings in compliance with AS/NZS standards.
  • The key responsibilities include conducting protection coordination studies, short circuit analysis, load flow, and stability studies using industry software (ETAP, PowerFactory, DigSILENT).
  • Developing detailed specifications for protective relays, current transformers/voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and associated control/protection panels.
  • Liaising with utilities, EPC contractors, and original equipment manufacturers for protection equipment selection and configuration.
  • Preparing technical documentation including protection reports, single-line diagrams, and functional specifications.
  • Supporting SCADA and communication system integration for protection and control systems.
  • Providing technical input for tendering and project proposals, including equipment schedules and technical compliance matrices.
  • Reviewing factory acceptance test (FAT) and site acceptance test (SAT) procedures from a protection perspective, ensuring compliance with design intent.
  • Conducting root cause analysis of protection system maloperations and recommending corrective measures.
  • Ensuring designs incorporate workplace health and safety, isolation, and safe work requirements in protection schemes.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of developments in protection technologies, IEC/IEEE standards, and industry best practices.

This is a highly specialized role that demands strong technical expertise and effective collaboration skills.
