
Documentary Producer in South Africa

This is a unique chance to gain hands-on experience in wildlife documentary production. You will be working with an environmental and media company that focuses on bringing attention to environmental issues specific to Africa.
You will learn how to develop, film, and edit your own wildlife documentary set in an African game reserve. The project spans broadcasters, corporations, non-governmental organizations, print media, and online news outlets.
The course provides a hands-on experience geared toward breaking into this demanding industry. You will gain skills relevant to camera operators, directors, producers, script-writers, and the diverse positions required to produce and broadcast a wildlife documentary.
The program runs over 1 month. The first and last weeks are spent at Mossel Bay conducting pre-production and post-production work. The remaining 9 days are spent living on a reserve, filming your wildlife documentary.
During your time, you will participate in the following activities:
- Week 1: Orientation to Mossel Bay and the program, intro to journalism and journalistic writing styles, narrative writing workshop, and guided edits.
- Week 2: Rewriting and editing tutorials, interviewing techniques, research, and practical writing.
- Week 3: Travel writing tutorial, research on upcoming expeditions, travel writing and blogging, and practical writing.
- Week 4: Environmental journalism tutorial, self-led interviews and source finding, and practical writing.
The Garden Route Region of South Africa is renowned for its diversity of reserves, sanctuaries, tourism attractions, and research institutes. Expeditions will travel to different venues to allow you to visit the organizations on which your stories are based.

Job RequirementsThis opportunity is open to entry-level candidates. You should have basic knowledge of photography and writing. Experience in documentary production is not necessary but preferred.
