Job Title: Senior Resident Medical Officer

About the Role:

This is a challenging and rewarding role for a skilled medical professional to provide effective care to patients in a complex clinical environment.

The key purpose of this position is to deliver high-quality patient care under supervision, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to achieve optimal outcomes.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinating patient admissions, management, and discharge planning in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
  • Ensuring accurate documentation of patient information in medical records.
  • Providing day-to-day assessment and management of patients, communicating effectively with patients and their families about their condition and treatment.
  • Communicating and coordinating care with the team, arranging consultations with other staff when necessary, and ensuring smooth transitions between hospital and community-based care modalities.
  • Making decisions concerning patient care in consultation with immediate supervisors.
  • Working as a semi-autonomous Senior Resident Medical Officer within the Intensive Care unit, managing patients with some supervision from Specialists.
  • Documenting patient care to meet medico-legal standards as set by Bathurst Hospital policy.
  • Working an average of 80 hours per fortnight, including evening, weekend, and night shifts.
  • Attending regular continuing Medical Education programs for medical and nursing staff.
  • Providing support and supervision to Resident Medical Officers in the Intensive Care unit.
  • Contributing to the teaching of University students attached to Bathurst Hospital.
  • Supporting and contributing to Quality/Clinical Practice improvement activities within the Bathurst Intensive Care unit.
  • Developing and maintaining care plans for patients.
  • Completing discharge documentation and communicating effectively with community doctors and health professionals.
  • Liaising appropriately with inpatient teams.
  • Reviewing and documenting investigation results for all patients, including those already discharged.
  • Contribute to projects or committees relevant to Critical Care as requested.
  • Complete requests for medico-legal documentation if required.
Key Accountabilities:

  • Completing comprehensive patient histories by obtaining information from patients and other relevant sources.
  • Documenting full patient histories and physical examinations within progress notes even if covering doctors admit the patient.
  • Writing legible, accurate, and signed progress notes every day, particularly after ward rounds.
  • Formulating management plans for all patients in consultation with Senior Medical Staff.
  • Ensuring appropriate investigations are ordered and followed up, and that management plans are altered accordingly.
  • Showing commitment to effective handovers of patients.
  • Designing and communicating discharge plans containing accurate patient admission histories and clearly identified management plans.
  • Being first on call for patient assessments and treatments during the day.
  • Appropriately liaising for advice and help with supervising medical staff.
  • Completing death certificates, cremation certificates, medical certificates, and discharge scripts.
  • Exercising independent judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills, consulting supervising medical staff as needed.
  • Ensuring appropriate input from key stakeholders and achieving consensus where possible.
  • Allocating teaching time according to evidence of learning need.
  • Dealing with matters confidentially.
  • Respecting the professional values of staff.
Communication:

The doctor will work closely with all members of staff, contributing to a multi-disciplinary team. They must be able to deal with urgent and sensitive matters, exercising discretion, sensitivity, and maintaining confidentiality. The doctor should work cooperatively within a team environment, actively contributing to team activities, including participating in team meetings and decision-making processes.

Performance Monitoring:

In addition to core competency standards, the Doctor is expected to comply with legislative requirements as they relate to Supervision requirements set out by the Medical Board of Australia. The Doctor also needs to adhere to Western NSW Local Health District performance management policies, Work Health and Safety requirements, and the Western NSW Local Health District Code of Conduct.
