Artillery Soldier Role

As an Artillery Soldier in the Australian Defence Force, you'll be part of a dynamic team that operates at the forefront of combat and security operations.

You'll learn to be the eyes and ears of the battlefield, providing artillery fire, systematic surveillance, and accurate target acquisition. You'll employ powerful weaponry, such as the M777 Howitzer, High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), and Enhanced National Surface to Air Missile System (eNASAMS), to locate and coordinate the annihilation of threats.

You'll also be trained to use high-tech communications and surveillance systems to support Artillery Operations. No prior experience is required to become an Artillery Soldier. You'll learn everything you need to know to work with advanced technology.

Through world-class training, you'll gain a highly desirable skillset to set you up for a future career in the military and beyond. If you're physically active or a proactive thinker and can work effectively in a team environment, you'll thrive as an Artillery Soldier.

The Artillery Soldier pathway will provide you with the skills to advance in one of four roles:

  • Artillery Observer – Be the eyes and ears of the battlefield, using high-tech equipment to locate enemy targets and gather battlespace intelligence.
  • Artillery Operator – Be part of the team that sets up, aims, and fires one of the Army's most powerful weapons in a role full of camaraderie and ongoing opportunities.
  • Artillery Command Systems Operator – Use advanced surveillance equipment to understand the battlefield, identify targets, and produce and communicate firing solutions for artillery and other available firepower.
  • Air Defence Operator – Use sophisticated radar systems to identify and analyze potential threats, then employ surface-to-air missile systems to destroy them, in this team-oriented combat role.

You'll be streamed into a specialist role as you progress through training. Allocation to a specific role is not guaranteed – it's based on your preference, existing qualifications, performance, and availability of positions.

Whichever role you take on, you'll build a unique skillset and work with various units across the Australian Defence Force. This is a hands-on role where trusting and respecting your team is key. You'll leverage your existing spatial awareness and interpersonal skills, and grow in confidence as you develop. You'll also enjoy other benefits of being in the Army, such as keeping fit through sport and physical training, experiencing travel and adventure, and doing it all with friends you'll keep for life.

If you're seeking a challenge outside of the everyday, this role is for you.
