Role Overview

The Australian Government Department of Defence is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Chief of Staff to the Defence 2-Star Major General of Cyber Operations Division (COD). The successful applicant will operate with a high degree of autonomy, driving organisational communication, collaborations, and alignment, and will be responsible for providing strategic advice to the Major General on current and emerging issues relevant to the COD and the Defence enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing strategic advice to the Major General on current and emerging issues relevant to the COD and the Defence enterprise;
  • Advising the Major General and the COD executive leadership team and staff on matters relating to governance, risk, and public sector accountability;
  • Undertaking internal and external engagement and representation to advance the COD strategic intent and business objectives;
  • Attending with or representing the Major General at internal committees and meetings;
  • Maintaining awareness of and delivering support to government priorities, including through media enquiries, ministerial briefs, and cabinet submissions;
  • Oversight and management of the COD office and support staff, ensuring that diary management, travel, guest management, and other administrative tasks are professionally delivered;
  • Oversight of Human Resources, Governance, Information and Knowledge Management, and Work Health and Safety functions;

About the Team

The Chief of Staff will manage a team of one Executive Level 2 and four Executive Level 1 officers, with supporting Australian Public Service (APS) staff who provide a range of broader enabling functions. The team works to support Defence's Cyber Operations area, which includes numerous Directorates that provide support to Defence personnel nationally and internationally.

Requirements

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic, professional, and experienced individual who is able to think strategically, set and prioritise busy workloads, identify risks and opportunities, and collaborate effectively in a Whole of Government setting. They will have a high level of understanding of governance, risk, compliance, and ministerial acumen, as well as a sound understanding of the machinery of Government and a proven ability to achieve results in a Whole of Government setting.
