Naval Construction Branch Role

The Naval Construction Branch is seeking a skilled individual to lead a team of technical professionals in the role of Hull and Structure Lead.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on a range of navy vessel projects, with a focus on quality assurance and verification processes. You will be part of a working shipyard, contributing to the delivery of vessels used by the Navy.

As a key member of the team, you will provide supervision and specialist advice to personnel conducting shipbuilding assurance inspections and audits. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and providing necessary support and specialist advice to a team of specialist personnel.
  • Attending inspections related to verification and quality assurance.
  • Conducting specialist reviews of technical reports and drawings.
  • Responsible for inspections within allocated discipline.
  • Supervision/support to matters of steel production, fabrication, paint, and (sub)decking.
  • Articulate any residual risks and reports.
  • Management and reporting of tests and Non-Conformities.
  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship within Defence, Prime contractors, suppliers, classification society, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Liaise with the Acceptance manager to drive closure of NCR's and open ITP's throughout construction and commissioning.

About Our Team

The Naval Construction Branch is accountable for the assurance of ship construction, set-to-work, and transit of vessels constructed at the Osborne Naval Shipyard and Henderson precinct. We are headquartered in Osborne, SA, with detachments in Henderson, WA, and a smaller presence in Port Macquarie, NSW.

Our team is furthering continuous naval shipbuilding and growing sovereign capability by overseeing the construction process, ensuring quality and standards are met. We store lessons learnt and develop standard shipbuilding procedures for construction.

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Demonstrated experience in shipbuilding, hull and structure inspection including quality assurance and verification processes.
  • Experience in leading and supervising a team of individuals to achieve quality outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, and influence the work of teams.
  • Attention to detail and a high level of ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise sound decision-making and judgement to provide expert technical and policy advice.
