Senior Backend Software Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Software Engineer to lead our team in designing and evolving scalable backend systems that support admin experiences across large enterprises and growing SMBs.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand multi-team admin needs, identify opportunities for system improvements, and turn them into reliable solutions.

The ideal candidate will have deep backend expertise in JVM-based languages such as Java or Kotlin, experience in designing and leading backend strategies for large-scale distributed systems, and a proven track record of mentoring engineers and championing scalable practices.

You will also be responsible for guiding architecture decisions for high-volume, high-data services, staying across industry trends, and sharing ideas that lift how we build at Canva.

Requirements
  • Staff or Principal Engineer level experience
  • Deep backend expertise in JVM-based languages
  • Experience in designing and leading backend strategies for large-scale distributed systems
  • Proven track record of mentoring engineers and championing scalable practices
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
