Job Title: Senior Legal Counsel

Housing Choices Australia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join our Legal & Governance team. As a key member of our team, you will provide strategic legal and governance support to ensure the success of our mission to deliver safe, affordable, and sustainable housing outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide expert legal advice on corporate, commercial, property, and regulatory matters.
  • Support property acquisitions, developments, and social housing projects, including project finance structuring.
  • Negotiate, prepare, and review legal documents for transactions, ensuring compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective decision-making and legal governance.
  • Liaise with external lawyers and regulators to ensure legal compliance and cost-effective services.
  • Advise the Risk, Assurance, and Compliance team on regulatory and governance requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of policies, processes, and systems to ensure best practices in legal and corporate governance.
  • Brief management and the Board on key legal matters and ensure legal aspects align with HCA's strategic goals.
Requirements:
  • 8+ years post-admission experience and a current practicing certificate in law.
  • Expertise in corporate, commercial, or property law, including property acquisitions, developments, or debt financing transactions.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills, with sound commercial judgement.
  • Proven ability to draft and negotiate legal documents, including finance and corporate agreements.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to explain legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience managing stakeholder relationships, including government bodies, regulators, and clients.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive approach to driving change and delivering practical, creative legal solutions in support of HCA's goals.

  • Agree and undergo any other employment screening as required by Housing Choices - including but not restricted to Working with Children or Vulnerable Persons and NDIS Worker (this will be as applicable based on the state location and/or function of the role)
  • Agree and comply with Child Safety policies and procedures
  • Provide a current driver's license and willingness to travel across Housing Choices' locations, if and as required.
