About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Scientist to join our team at Diamond Light Source. As a Sample Environment Development Scientist, you will play a key role in the development and implementation of innovative sample environments for our beamlines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and commission gas, heating, liquid, and biasing sample environments for our scanning probe beamlines.
  • Provide technical and scientific expertise to support the scientific research projects of our beamlines.
  • Advise on strategy for experimental and data collection procedures, including data analysis.
  • Enable the publication of results through collaboration with our user community.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of novel experiments and techniques.
  • Manage the development, procurement, testing, installation, and maintenance of bespoke scientific equipment and software.
  • Provide input and recommendations on safety aspects of our beamlines and peripheral laboratories.

Requirements:

  • PhD degree or equivalent in chemistry, physics, biology, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop an independent research program and a successful scientific publication record.
  • Experience or knowledge in synchrotron research, beamline instrumentation, software packages, and programming.
  • Experience in techniques used on our Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy beamlines or X-ray nanoprobe, including X-ray Fluorescence mapping, X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (NEXAFS/XANES), and ptychography.
  • Post-doctoral experience in a relevant science area, including beamline X-ray optics and X-ray instrumentation, beamline design, construction, commissioning, and operation, and project management.
