Drive is a renowned automotive publication that has been shaping the future of the industry in Australia. The Data Engineer role sits at the heart of our data operations, designing systems that scale, protect data quality, and support teams with data, reporting, and insights.

This is a hands-on position where you will play both architect and operator, designing systems that can handle diverse data types while ensuring reliability and performance at scale. You will work collaboratively with Technology squads, ETL Engineers, and the Head of Infrastructure.

Key responsibilities include creating flexible, scalable, and efficient data models that cater to diverse analytical and processing requirements, writing efficient queries, structuring datasets for analytics, and troubleshooting performance issues in production environments.

You will also design systems that scale and adapt to schema drift, late-arriving data, or inconsistent input format, create self-service capabilities for business users while maintaining enterprise-grade security and governance standards, and establish standards and automated processes to ensure data maintains accuracy, completeness, and consistency throughout its lifecycle.

Additionally, you will implement multi-layered security measures including encryption, access controls, and continuous monitoring to protect sensitive data, apply infrastructure as code principles and tools like Terraform to manage cloud resources programmatically, ensuring reproducible deployments and consistent environments, and apply window functions, common table expressions, and query optimization techniques to improve performance.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, and have 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a strong focus on data modelling, aggregation, and business intelligence.

Required skills and qualifications include expertise in SQL for complex data manipulation, querying, and aggregation, excellent communication skills to translate business needs into technical data solutions, and a proactive, detail-oriented mindset with a focus on data accuracy and integrity.
