About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Science Manager to join our team at the Australian Department of Home Affairs. As a key member of our Data and Economic Analysis Centre, you will be responsible for leading complex data science projects and delivering innovative solutions to drive business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, roadmaps, and sprint backlogs.
  • Track project progress and ensure timely completion within budget constraints.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, bottlenecks, and dependencies.
  • Implement and promote agile methodologies within the team.
  • Collaborate with the AI Product Manager to set delivery targets and lead project sprints.
  • Manage and mentor a team of data scientists.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to ensure continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Engage and collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to understand their challenges and data landscape.
  • Develop and maintain project and product documentation.
  • Prepare and deliver communications, briefings, and policy material as needed.

Requirements:

  • 7+ years' experience managing and delivering complex and technical projects preferably within the data science space.
  • 5+ years' experience in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • At least five years' experience leading project delivery, ideally within a data, IT, or analytics domain.
  • Strong understanding of data science principles and methodologies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
