Key Leadership Role in Mental Health Care

This is a high-profile opportunity to shape mental health care across South Australia. The role requires a visionary leader who can contribute at the highest level to a system committed to prevention, early intervention, equity, and excellence in care.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on mental health services across the state, promoting continuous improvement, monitoring standards of care, and safeguarding the rights of consumers and carers.

The position involves overseeing the treatment of voluntary and involuntary patients, the use of restrictive practices, and the administration of mental health legislation.

A key aspect of the role is providing high-level policy advice, issuing standards for patient care, and inspecting public and private mental health facilities.

The Chief Psychiatrist will lead multidisciplinary teams across safety and quality, policy and legislation, and suicide prevention, working closely with clinicians, consumers, carers, government agencies, and non-government organisations to implement reforms and strengthen services.

To be successful, the candidate will need to demonstrate:

  • a proven track record of leading at a senior level in complex, multidisciplinary environments;
  • extensive knowledge of contemporary mental health issues;
  • expertise in policy development, service improvement, and stakeholder engagement;
  • strong influencing, negotiation, and communication skills, combined with clinical credibility and a collaborative leadership style.
