At BESIX Watpac, we are committed to delivering complex construction projects across Australia and New Zealand. To support our growth, we are seeking a highly skilled Construction Lawyer to join our dynamic team.

About the Role

  • We are looking for a qualified lawyer with significant experience in construction law, preferably with front-end experience.
  • The ideal candidate will have strong research and analytical skills, as well as sound problem-solving abilities and commercial judgment.
  • You will work closely with our contracts team to provide expert advice on contract interpretation and administration.
  • Your responsibilities will also include identifying and advising on key contractual and legal risks, providing advice on risk management and dispute avoidance.
  • You will be required to advise on relevant legislative requirements and ensure that our policies are regularly updated to reflect these changes.
  • In addition, you will prepare legal and commercial benchmark reviews of tender head contracts, report on legal risks in tenders, and work with tender teams to address these risks.
  • You will also attend tender, contract, and dispute resolution discussions and negotiations, and prepare special conditions to our template suite of agreements to ensure compliance with head contract requirements.
  • Other key responsibilities include instructing and managing external lawyers, reviewing and drafting amendments to various forms of construction documents, and reviewing and updating our template suite of agreements to incorporate legislative changes and/or streamline processes.
  • You will be responsible for providing general legal advice to the business, including IT, HR, marketing, and WHS matters.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in law
  • Holding a practicing certificate in NSW
  • Solid experience in construction law (preferably with front-end experience)
  • Research and analytical skills related to legal matters
  • Sound problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise balanced and commercial judgment
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate, influence, and build effective relationships at all levels of the business
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously using initiative, sound reasoning, listening, and decision-making skills
