Ballarat, Victoria, Australia University of Melbourne Full time

About the Role

We are seeking a psychologist to join our team working on an impactful research initiative - the Intensive Early Childhood Education and Care Program Research Project. The project aims to evaluate an intensive early childhood education and care program for children experiencing significant family stress and hardship. Previous research conducted by the University of Melbourne has shown that an intensive ECEC program can significantly improve the developmental trajectories of children who participated in the intervention, compared to children in the control group.

The Chief Investigators from the Melbourne Institute are A/Professor Yi-Ping Tseng and Nichola Coombs. The team will also be working closely with researchers from Parkville Institute lead by A/Professor Brigid Jordan and Dr Anne Kennedy, both of whom also hold honorary positions at the University of Melbourne.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting assessments of Bayley Scales, WPPSI, and the Emotional Availability Scales (EAS) for study children (aged 6 months to 5 years) and writing up children's developmental assessment reports.
  • Ensuring engagement of research participants and minimizing attrition.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to ethics and research protocols and securing storage of all data collected.
  • Managing high-risk situations and critical incidents if they arise during data collection.
  • Providing data collection updates to the research team.

Requirements

We are seeking a psychologist with experience in conducting and interpreting standardized developmental assessments, along with substantial clinical experience in assessing and treating infants with psychosocial vulnerabilities and working with families with complex needs. Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated understanding and capability for working with diverse groups of children and families are also essential.

You will also have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology (Pearson Clinical Assessment User Level A).
  • Ability to function independently as a clinical researcher and to provide a full range of psychometric assessments.
  • Experience in Infant and/or Child Mental Health.

This position requires the incumbent to hold a current and valid Working with Children Check to ensure the University provides a safe environment for everyone. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This role requires current valid work rights for Australia.
