Project Overview

We are offering two PhD scholarships as part of an Australian Research Council funded project.

The project explores the new African Diaspora in Australia and its adoption of Pentecostalism.

  • To understand the challenges faced by African-Australian communities.
  • To determine why many members join Pentecostal churches.
  • To investigate how Pentecostal churches support translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging among these communities.
  • To contribute to policy efforts improving outcomes for African new arrivals in Australia.

The PhD candidates will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia and with African Diasporas in the country. Key research questions include:

  • How do Pentecostal churches facilitate or hinder processes of settlement and integration?
  • How do some Pentecostal megachurches generate transnational religious fields that harness resources from branches worldwide?
  • What impact does this have on Australian cities' post-secular social landscapes?

Applicants should have a strong interest in the intersections of migration and religion. Students of African heritage are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligible Fields

Anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or a related field.
