About Rosebery Mine

MMG Rosebery Mine is a historic underground polymetallic base metal mine situated in the township of Rosebery on Tasmania's west coast. Since 1936, it has been a cornerstone of the Rosebery community and stands as one of Tasmania's largest and longest-operating underground mines, producing concentrates of zinc, copper, lead, and gold doré.

With a workforce of approximately 500 individuals and their families, the mine emphasizes community engagement and collaborates with a variety of local businesses, thereby enhancing the economy of the West Coast of Tasmania and beyond.

MMG also maintains an office in Burnie, providing employees with the option to work from there when not required on-site.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Superintendent of Metallurgy, the Process Control Engineer plays a pivotal role in supporting operations and ensuring the highest quality of process control functionality, which is essential for optimizing value recovery from the concentrator. This position is also responsible for overseeing the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the SCADA/PLC system.

This role operates on a 5/2:4/3 roster, with residential options available in Rosebery or DIDO from any location in Tasmania, or based at our Burnie office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the performance of the PCS system, collaborating with maintenance and IT teams to ensure system hardware availability.
  • Work alongside the Metallurgy team to grasp process value drivers and the recovery impacts of unit operations, identifying and implementing enhancements to process control for improved circuit stability and performance.
  • Stay informed about advancements in Processing Technology and Control technical solutions to determine potential benefits for Rosebery.
  • Monitor process performance and engage in optimization activities, including graphics modifications, tuning of process control loops, and alarm management.
  • Ensure compliance with Change Management processes for all PCS modifications, maintaining system architecture and the integrity of interfaces from SCADA/historian to Mine Operating Systems.
  • Oversee control philosophy documentation and provide guidance on documentation management.
  • Collaborate with other Process Control Consultants who provide 24/7 support as needed.
  • Engage with external Process Control Support Contractors involved in both project and support functions.
  • Offer ongoing support and training to key PCS users, facilitating educational programs and mentoring processing technical staff.

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies

  • Comprehensive understanding of Process Control System architecture, particularly Honeywell (Experion) DCS and/or SCADA/Rockwell PLC systems, including coding.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and P&IDs.
  • Solid knowledge of process control optimization techniques, including loop tuning and alarm management.
  • In-depth understanding of process control system architecture and the change management processes necessary for its preservation.
  • Basic knowledge of core processes in base metals concentrators, such as crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening, and dewatering is desirable.
  • Previous experience with DCS and PLC systems, Pi Historian, as well as various communication protocols would be highly regarded.
  • Proven ability to analyze and manage processing plant control system performance, undertaking control loop tuning and alarm management to enhance circuit operation and stability.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and implementing projects aimed at maximizing value recovery through process control improvements.
