Senior Mechanical Engineer

Karara Mining Limited is an Australian company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. The Ansteel Group, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China, owns Karara. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton in Western Australia, Karara is a significant mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces high-grade concentrate products for export to steelmakers.

This is a full-time site-based position for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Operational Optimisation Department. Working on an 8 days on and 6 days off FIFO roster from Perth.

The newly created position, reporting to the Principal Engineer, focuses on on-site improvement projects, conducting inspections, and developing maintenance and repair plans. To be successful in this role, you need:

  • A recognised degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering
  • A WA 'C' Class manual driver's licence
  • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering within a processing plant environment (preferably Magnetite processing)
  • Experience working with various equipment, including conveyors, slurry pumps, crushers, high-pressure grind rolls, ball mills, tower mills, magnetic separators
  • Demonstrable success in applying engineering principles, statistical data analysis, and implementing processes
  • Familiarity with Root Cause Analysis and 5 Whys work process methods and tools
  • Understanding of common predictive technologies: vibration analysis, lubrication, thermography, motor analysis, ultrasonic testing, machinery analysis, alignment and balancing procedures, and fixed equipment diagnostic technologies
  • Practical statistical analysis skills, including failure statistics, failure rates, hazard rates, and life expectancy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail
  • National Police Clearance

To be eligible for this role, you must be legally permitted to work permanently in Australia.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to provide engineering support aimed at improving equipment reliability, achieving operational targets for cost, production, and safety
  • E nsure that all work conducted by the Mechanical Maintenance and Engineering Department adheres to KML site standards, regulatory and statutory requirements, and relevant Australian standards
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, fault find, and provide technical engineering advice, ensuring issues are resolved safely and promptly to maximise availability and production outcomes

About Karara Mining

Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open-pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant, and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, capable of handling up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
