Principal Water Officer - Hydrogeologist Position Overview

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate hydrogeologist to lead our Statewide Groundwater team, providing expert advice on groundwater systems and modeling, contributing to policy development, and supporting regulatory frameworks. Through monitoring, scientific research, and data-driven insights, you'll help ensure the sustainable use of groundwater resources.

This role will involve delivering expert hydrogeological advice and peer review for major infrastructure, mining, and resource development projects. You will undertake detailed groundwater assessments and contribute to the development and review of conceptual and numerical groundwater models. Additionally, you will provide scientific input into policy development and support the regulatory framework that governs groundwater use and protection in Queensland.

You will also support and guide complex groundwater licensing decisions in line with water legislation and resource objectives. Furthermore, you will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align groundwater science with broader strategic planning objectives.

In this role, you will lead, supervise, and mentor a small team of hydrogeologists and technical officers, promoting a culture of scientific integrity, continuous learning, and innovation. You will drive technical capability development within the team and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver expert hydrogeological advice and peer review for major infrastructure, mining, and resource development projects.
  • Undertake detailed groundwater assessments and contribute to the development and review of conceptual and numerical groundwater models.
  • Provide scientific input into policy development and support the regulatory framework that governs groundwater use and protection in Queensland.
