Senior Environmental Approvals Specialist – Mine Closure

ERM is in search of a dedicated and knowledgeable Senior Environmental Approvals Specialist to enhance our expanding Sustainable Mining Team. This is a permanent, full-time role that offers the chance to engage in a prestigious international consultancy on a variety of multidisciplinary projects across different sectors, including mining, energy, renewables, transport, and infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and approval processes within the Australian context, along with technical proficiency in various environmental and social disciplines. Leadership and project management capabilities are essential, with specific expertise in mine closure planning and rehabilitation being highly valued.

We are looking to fill multiple positions to bolster our Sustainable Mining Team in managing various approvals, mine closure, and rehabilitation initiatives.

As part of a dynamic and inclusive technical team, you will play a crucial role in project execution and decision-making to ensure effective delivery of mine closure projects, primarily within the Australian mining sector.

Key Qualifications:

In-depth knowledge of environmental approvals, permitting, legislative frameworks, and governance; Experience in managing and facilitating closure and rehabilitation studies; Proficiency in compliance and auditing processes.

Core Responsibilities:

Your role will involve leading and/or assisting in a diverse range of projects related to capital project development, environmental approvals/permitting, and mine rehabilitation and closure planning, along with the formulation of associated management plans.

Conducting approvals reviews, providing strategic guidance, and identifying approvals triggers and pathways while mitigating associated risks. Offering technical expertise and strategic direction for the planning, execution, and monitoring of mine site rehabilitation and closure activities. Engaging with stakeholders and government entities regarding project approvals. Ensuring oversight, quality control, and accurate data recording for reporting purposes. Collaborating with ERM's national and global practitioners to execute projects, participating in teams composed of multidisciplinary professionals from various ERM offices worldwide. Mentoring junior consulting staff to enhance their technical skills, project experience, and core consulting abilities. Contributing to proposal development, including crafting technical scopes and cost estimates in line with ERM's policies and procedures. Directing and overseeing project management activities, including task delegation, subcontractor management, health & safety protocol adherence, monitoring commercial performance, quality review of deliverables, and client interactions. Collaborating with global ERM resources to strengthen relationships with key clients, thereby expanding ERM's market presence through excellence in technical delivery and business development support.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Planning, or Engineering. Over 10 years of relevant experience in the mining industry or related sectors. Consulting experience with a focus on mine closure planning, assessment, and design is highly desirable. Comprehensive knowledge of industry best practices and regulatory standards. Experience in auditing and compliance is advantageous. Business development experience and client relationship management. Strong technical writing, communication, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills. Project management expertise, including the development of work plans, budgets, schedules, and project controls.
