The Team Overview

The data team at Xero is responsible for driving the adoption of data-driven decision making across the company - for both internal users and global audiences of small business owners, bookkeepers, and accountants.

We create, manage, and deliver a wide range of data services and products, including core reporting, key data dimensions, extensible and scalable analytical data processing, machine learning frameworks, and API-driven prediction services.

We are the centre of expertise for data architecture, data modeling, machine learning, ethical data usage, and artificial intelligence service design.

About the Job

As a Data Scientist, you will work collaboratively with colleagues and subject matter experts to solve complex problems using scientific thinking, algorithms, and analytical data processing.

You will contribute to our culture of collaboration, mutual respect, and embracing a growth mindset.

Together with engineers, you will build and operate beautiful, intelligent products and services that meet the needs of our users every day.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Immerse yourself in Xero's data, wrangling complex and messy data to gain a deeper understanding of its value.
  • Apply sound scientific methods to drive product development, including hypothesis generation, experimentation, and analysis.
  • Lead in hypothesis-driven experimentation and deliver measurable impact through holdouts.
  • Maintain high personal coding standards and collaborate with other scientists and engineers to produce robust and reproducible code.
  • Work together with engineers to maintain and operate the end-to-end pipelines that support data-intensive applications at Xero.

Your Key Qualifications:

  • Previous practical experience in a similar analytics role.
  • Experience with data querying languages, scripting languages, and/or statistical/mathematical software.
  • Bachelor's, Masters, or Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field; or equivalent practical experience.
  • Ability to grasp mathematical concepts that underpin data analysis.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to tailor a message for peers and stakeholders.
