This role supports AIMS to maintain its core capability in long-term ocean observing by leading fieldwork to maintain weather observing systems and directing and contributing to the development, assembly, and design work of instruments and sensors to be deployed.
About the Opportunity
We are seeking a Physical Oceanography Research Scientist with expertise in data collection, processing, and analysis. You will undertake data collection, processing, and analysis to deliver high-quality physical observational data streams that meet the requirements of internal and external stakeholders and funding providers.
You will have a tertiary qualification in physics, mathematics, physical oceanography, engineering, or equivalent disciplines, along with an understanding of oceanography. Your demonstrated experience in MATLAB and/or Python programming, data analysis, and database applications is essential for this position.
The ideal candidate will have well-developed written communication skills, including the ability to produce scientific and field reports, proficient organizational skills, and the capability to manage field-work logistics, planning, and scheduling while being committed to quality outcomes.
Due to the fieldwork nature of this position, you must hold SCUBA diving qualifications or have the ability to obtain a Commercial Diver certification to AS2815.1 or AQF Certified Scientific Diver qualifications. You must also be able to engage in offshore field trips often undertaken in demanding conditions for extended periods and at moderate heights.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake data collection, processing, and analysis to deliver high-quality physical observational data streams.
- Lead fieldwork to maintain weather observing systems and direct the development, assembly, and design work of instruments and sensors.
- Contribute to the development of new technologies and methodologies to improve data collection and analysis.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Tertiary qualification in physics, mathematics, physical oceanography, engineering, or equivalent disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience in MATLAB and/or Python programming, data analysis, and database applications.
- Well-developed written communication skills, including the ability to produce scientific and field reports.
- Proficient organizational skills and capability to manage field-work logistics, planning, and scheduling.
- SCUBA diving qualifications or ability to obtain a Commercial Diver certification to AS2815.1 or AQF Certified Scientific Diver qualifications.
