Job Title: Legal Support Specialist

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Legal Support Specialist in Care and Protection / Family Law.

The role involves providing high-level support to solicitors, coordinating tasks, and assisting with court proceedings. If you have a passion for social justice and making a positive impact on First Nations people, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with Government and non-Government agencies, welfare agencies, Courts, and other sections of the legal community. You will assist solicitors in researching matters of law, undertaking case reviews, and drafting documents required for hearings.

  • You will also be responsible for obtaining supporting documentation, liaising with clients, and providing administrative support as needed.

To succeed in this role, you will need formal paralegal qualifications or currently undertaking a Law Degree. You must have knowledge and understanding of issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people involved in the care and protection system. Additionally, you should have in-depth knowledge of support and referral services available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients involved in the Care and Protection and/or Family Law system.

Key Responsibilities:

Supporting Solicitors:

  • Coordinate high-level paralegal support for solicitors in Care and Protection / Family Law, and associated matters.
  • Assist solicitors at Court in appropriate cases, including note taking.
  • Obtain supporting documentation and draft documents required by solicitors for the preparation of hearings in accordance with internal practice standards.

Client Support:

  • Assist in researching matters of law or undertaking case reviews for solicitors, as required.
  • Assist in client interviews, and drafting of Applications, Affidavits, and other court documents, as and where required.

Liaison and Communication:

  • Liaise with Government and non-Government agencies, welfare agencies, Courts, and other sections of the legal community in relation to clients of the Service.

**Requirements:**

  • Formal paralegal qualifications, or currently undertaking a Law Degree.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people involved in the care and protection system.
  • In-depth knowledge of support and referral services available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients involved in the Care and Protection and/or Family Law system.
